.22lr has been in short supply, for at least 3 years, now – but why?
We’ve been in business for almost 2 years, and in that short time we’ve heard many theories as to the reason for the .22lr ammo shortage. We’ve decided to do a little digging and see if we couldn’t provide our customers better answers to this common question.
There is a consensus across the web, that these are the 4 main potential reasons for the .22lr ammo shortage
- The huge increase in gun owners across the US. From our own perspective, training classes have more than tripled in attendance over the last year. News reports often mention the increase in permits across the country. The result: more gun owners buying the most popular ammo, along with everyone else.
- When the stock does get to the shelves, gun owners tend to buy as much as they can, because of the limited quantity available. The mindset being, “if I don’t buy it now, someone else will, and I won’t be able to”.
- Stockpiling – whether it’s hoarding, or prepping, gun owners are storage as much .22lr as they can get their hands on.
- Price gauging. It has been happening since the beginning of the shortage and doesn’t seem to be slow. Some people will purchase as much .22lr as they can, and then list that ammo online at at 2, 3 and even 4 times the price! So long as gun owners will go online and buy whatever they can get their hands on, at whatever price is listed, people will continue to buy the supply and up sell for the demand.
